How to set up a Twitter account

by Sam Trainor-Buckingham published 29th Jul 2009

It's relatively simple to set up a twitter account, but it's not always clear what you should do to get going properly. We've given a step by step guide to get you to this point. Happy twittering!

Step 1: Visit www.twitter.com

Step 2: Click 'Sign Up Now'

Step 3: Enter Your Details

Enter your full name, create a username and password. I'd recommend you use your bar/restaurant/hotel/café name on the end. E.g. www.twitter.com/cafegiardino . Enter your email address and the security code and click 'Create my account'

Step 4: Find Your Friends

Twitter is a secure site, and to my knowledge no spam has ever been recorded as a result of entering your email address and password. The good part is, Twitter searches your address book and finds friends and colleagues on twitter who you can then follow. It also gives you the opportunity to invite people who aren't on twitter.

Step 5: Connecting Your Mobile

In the settings section, select devices and enter your phone number. Check the box and click 'save'

Step 6: Mobile Confirmation

You'll be given a 6 digit code. Send this to twitter (40404) and you'll receive a confirmation text.

Congratulations - you're now set to go and can text tweets from your mobile to twitter or update it directly on the website! You can also view our 21 tips on how to successfully 'tweet'
